**Summary:** A website can appear quickly yet feel slow when someone clicks a button. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) helps measure that responsiveness. Here is a practical starting point for Belgian small businesses.
A visitor opens your website on a phone. The image appears and the heading is readable. They tap the menu, but nothing seems to happen. They tap again. Suddenly, the menu opens and closes.
This is not only a loading problem. It concerns the delay between an action and the website's visible response. First impressions matter, but so does the rest of the visit. For a small business, interactions such as opening a form or starting a quote request are particularly important.
INP is a Core Web Vital: a metric describing user experience. It assesses how promptly a page responds to clicks, taps and keyboard interactions during a visit.
It measures the delay until the browser can show the next visual update. That might be an open menu or a loading indicator after a form submission. INP does not automatically measure how long the entire server request takes.
The final value reflects the slowest relevant interactions, with an adjustment for outliers. It is not simply an average of button response times. Google Search Central recommends aiming for an INP below 200 milliseconds. Treat that as a responsiveness target, not a guarantee for every individual action.
The three Core Web Vitals address different experiences:
Optimising a large image may improve loading. It does not necessarily resolve a menu blocked by a heavy script.
Start with your important visitor journeys: mobile navigation, contact forms and booking or quote requests. Use PageSpeed Insights and, if you have access, Search Console's Core Web Vitals report.
Distinguish real-user data from controlled tests. A single test can help investigate a problem, but does not describe every visit. Low-traffic websites may lack field data. That is a coverage limitation, not proof of good or poor performance.
Use Chrome DevTools to investigate a specific slow interaction. Include a less powerful phone in your testing: a development laptop may hide delays that visitors experience.
After someone clicks Submit, show an appropriate status such as “Sending your request”. Show success only after the server actually confirms it. A loading indicator must not disguise a failed submission.
Chat widgets, tracking and other integrations can add browser work. Review what is necessary, when it loads and whether it delays interactions. Preserve consent requirements and privacy protections.
Opening a menu need not simultaneously sort a large list, run expensive calculations and rerender unrelated components. A developer can separate essential work from work that can happen later.
Complex pages with many dynamic elements can require more processing. Check whether each element supports the page's purpose, especially on mobile.
Record the slow interaction, the change made and the observed result. A new integration or redesign can reintroduce an earlier problem.
Google describes Core Web Vitals as part of the page experience its ranking systems seek to reward. Good scores are worthwhile, but do not guarantee a search position. A technically smooth page still needs useful, relevant content.
Responsiveness is therefore not simply a trick for search engines. It helps visitors find information and contact your business without frustration.
No. Loading concerns the page appearing; INP concerns its response to interactions during a visit.
It provides useful feedback, but the underlying action must also work reliably. Investigate both.
Missing field data is not a quality verdict. Investigate important interactions with developer tools and real devices.
Not necessarily. First identify the slow interaction and its cause. A focused change may be more useful than a rebuild.
A good website is more than a fast homepage. Navigation, forms and the path to contact should also feel clear and responsive. To discuss where your website feels sluggish, contact IntrICT through the contact page.
